Mason Greenwood and Fikayo Tomori miss out while Marcus Rashford and Jude Bellingham return Jadon Sancho, Kieran Trippier and Jesse Lingard have been dropped from England’s squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino. Marcus Rashford and Jude Bellingham have returned having missed out on the October internationals, though Fikayo Tomori misses out and there remains no place for Mason Greenwood. Rashford was one of several players to be unavailable to manager Gareth Southgate during the last camp due to injury. Harry Maguire, Kalvin Phillips and Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold also return. Sancho and Lingard miss out having struggled for regular playing time at Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Southgate admitting that Sancho was fortunate to be included in the October squad. Trippier’s omission comes despite the Atletico Madrid full-back captaining Southgate’s side in the 5-0 win over Andorra in the absence of Harry Kane and Jord...

West Ham vs Genk result: Said Benrahma hits brace but Hammers pegged back by late own goal in Europa League

Image
West Ham 2-2 Genk : The Hammers were not at their best but remain unbeaten in Europe, sharing the points in David Moyes’ 1,000th game as a manager. An own goal from Tomas Soucek cost David Moyes victory in his 1,000th match as a manager as West Ham were held to a 2-2 draw by Genk. Said Benrahma had scored twice as West Ham came from behind to lead 2-1 in their Europa League clash in Belgium. But the luckless substitute Soucek inadvertently headed a late cross inside the near post to leave the Hammers with just a point. Nevertheless, Moyes will be satisfied to see his side, who were below par in the first half, still well clear at the top of Group H following three wins and a draw, and destined for the knockout stages. The Hammers had swatted Genk aside 3-0 in London a fortnight ago, but the Belgians have since arrested a domestic slump and scored six goals in each of their last two matches. The first bump in the road on West Ham’s continental journey came in only the fourth minute. The...

T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka dump holders West Indies out in group stage

Image
It is the first time Windies have failed to make reach the semi-finals of the competition since 2010 Charith Asalanka's batting heroics were backed up by a fine bowling display as Sri Lanka comfortably beat West Indies by 20 runs in their final group game to knock the holders out of the Twenty20 World Cup on Thursday. It is the first time West Indies, winners in 2012 and 2016, have failed to reach the semi-finals of the competition since 2010. Sri Lanka were already out of contention to make the last four. Chasing 190, West Indies lost openers Chris Gayle (1) and Evin Lewis (8) within the first two overs and failed to overcome the early setbacks as the Sri Lankan bowlers picked up regular wickets in Abu Dhabi. Fighting knocks from Nicholas Pooran (46) and Shimron Hetmyer (81 not out) kept them in the game but the Sri Lankans had enough runs on the board as the Windies ended on 169-8. "I think we were below par... our bowlers did okay, they got 189 but it was a very good batt...

Ten-man Tottenham survive fightback from nine-man Vitesse in Antonio Conte’s first game in charge

Tottenham 3-2 Vitesse: Spurs almost gave up a 3-0 lead but hung on to win a dramatic Europa Conference League meeting Antonio Conte got a glimpse of what life at Tottenham is like with a dramatic 3-2 win over Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night. Conte was taking charge of his first game since being appointed as Spurs’ new boss following Nuno Espirito Santo’s dismissal on Monday. The Italian, a Premier League winner at Chelsea, has been tasked with taking the club back to the top table of English football but was given a clear indication of what a difficult journey that might be as Tottenham struggled against the Dutch side. Conte witnessed a perfect start as, having failed to register a shot on target in over two hours of Premier League football, Spurs found themselves 3-0 up in fewer than 30 minutes. Son Heung-min, who scored the first goal of both Jose Mourinho’s and Nuno’s reigns, did the same for Conte in the 14th minute before Lucas Moura and a Jacob R...

Yorkshire banned from hosting England matches in wake of ‘abhorrent’ racism scandal

Yorkshire’s handling of an investigation into allegations from former player Azeem Rafiq has been heavily criticised The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has suspended Yorkshire County Cricket Club from hosting England international fixtures and major matches, and has threatened the club with further punishment after finding their handling of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of racism “wholly unacceptable”. In a statement released on Thursday evening, the ECB chastised Yorkshire for causing “serious damage to the reputation of the game” and will take matters into their own hands given how poorly they have dealt with serious accusations of institutional racism. Despite commissioning an independent report that upheld seven of Rafiq’s 43 claims of bullying and racial harassment, last week the club determined no action was deemed necessary. The ECB deemed this failure to act “a significant breach of its obligations to the game”. The suspension on hosting means Headingley could be witho...
